The other day I was reading an article about a big, well-known tech company that’s been hiring people into technology positions that come from non-technical backgrounds. For example, they were hiring people with legal and arts backgrounds into very technology centric roles.
I found this fascinating…until I didn’t. More about that in a second.
The article interviewed a recent such hire. Let’s call this person John, to protect the innocent. Let’s also refer to the company as The Zoo, Inc., to protect the less than innocent.
John came to The Zoo from the arts and creative industry. He was known for his creative writing style covering the travel and entertainment industry. There, he wrote about cool places, interesting people and exciting cultures. John’s personality was on display in his work and it looked like it was providing him a lot of personal satisfaction.
Fast forward to John joining The Zoo.
He was asked in the interview to explain his role at the company and this is what he had to say (paraphrased)…
“I’m part of a tiger team whose mission is to explore modular matrix approaches that will revamp our homogenized strategic innovations. We’re using synchronized third-generation capabilities to bring interactive and incremental contingency mobile solutions to the market. We explore parallel reciprocal approaches to cross functional frameworks in order to solve real world challenges”.
Pardon me while I vomit.
Comparing his previous style of communicating to his current style, it’s easy to see that John had become assimilated.
Which brings me to the point of today’s essay…
Would a younger you recognize yourself today by the way you speak?
If not, it could be that you too have become assimilated.
And maybe the reason you’ve come to this blog is to learn how you can escape?
I often speak of the need to “demand” financial freedom of yourself.
That may sound a little strange. I’ll admit, it’s certainly an odd way to phrase things.
But here’s the thing…
What’s easy to do is also easy not to do.
It’s easy to integrate yourself into a system that is designed to keep you there and stay there. Work, purchase a bunch of things, rack up debt and pay the bills. Rinse and repeat.
It’s easy to not leave this system.
Which is why so many don’t.
They just acculturate. They just accept it as the way it is. They assimilate.
But there’s a small group of people who don’t.
There are some who wanted something better for themselves than to be jarred awake by an alarm clock at an obscene hour, just to get ready and drive an hour into a job at The Zoo.
These people got sick of speaking in a silly military fashion – chains of command, subordinates and the like.
They got tired of talking about giving 110%, new paradigms, open kimonos, leverage and low hanging fruit.
They grew nauseous when having to ask for a bio break in a marathon meeting or being told once more to think out of the box.
So what’d they do about it?
They grew disgusted with it.
They then turned that disgust into fuel.
They demanded a better life and they took action every day until they got the type of life they dreamt of, not the one they were disgusted by.
A life free to do what they want, when they want. A life free of money worries and time constraints. The financially free life.
That life is available to you.
But it’s going to require that you stand up and put a stop to being assimilated. It means you’re going to have to get mad when you catch yourself not really being yourself. It’s going to require action on your behalf.
So, the next time you catch yourself talking about peeling back the onion, moving the goalposts and blue sky thinking do this…
Tell yourself that really isn’t you, it’s just an imposter you’ve become.
And you’re not going to stand for it any more. Tell yourself that…
You’re going to read all the success books until you’re a walking encyclopedia of self-improvement.
You’re going to save a large portion of your income not blow your paycheck on crap.
You’re going to build investment capital and learn how to invest wisely.
You’re going to invest that capital into income producing assets not silly things that depreciate in value just to impress strangers.
And lastly, you’re going to start doing those things today, right now.
And then go do them.
For when you do those things, something marvelous will happen.
You’ll wake up one day and be dissimilated from the grind. You’ll no longer be a cog in the wheel or just a face in the crowd.
You’ll be you. The guy or gal who talks normally.
And what’s the first thing you’ll say?
It’s this…
“I’m free!”
Be free. Nothing else is worth it.
