No, The Problem Is Not That You Don’t Have The Time. Never Has Been. The Problem Is Inside You.

That fact that you’re reading this blog tells me something about you – somewhere in your mind is the capacity to dream big, or envision yourself doing something amazing.

You want to build wealth, not just to put some extra zeros in your bank account, but for what it would do for you – like let you leave the rat race behind so that you can do what you want with your time. And what would you do with all that time? Perhaps, travel the world, or become a painter. Or start that charity or open that missionary in a foreign land. Or write that novel that you’ve got deep inside you. Or maybe it’s just to spend more time with your kiddos, so that you can be there for the special times in their lives.

But you got busy. Too busy scrolling your phone screen, watching TV, catching up with all the mundane crap in life and you forgot about your dreams. You say things like “I don’t have time,” and when you get frustrated that you don’t have enough time, you assuage that feeling of impotence by buying junk you don’t need, which you think will make you feel better. Granite countertops, leather sofas, jet skis, designer shoes or a fancy boat that rarely gets used. Maybe that’s because you’re scared of whatever it is you’ve been thinking about for so long, or maybe it’s easier to just buy something instead of doing something. Or maybe something you saw told you that your dream was something different, and you bought into that.

A few months ago, I was talking to an acquaintance and he told me he had always dreamed of retiring early. I asked, “Are you going to?” and he said, “Well, I’ve always wanted to, but we don’t know,” for a number of reasons – a new house, some stress about financial things with credit cards, et cetera.

Let me tell you this…If you start a sentence off with “I’ve always wanted to …”, it means you aren’t going to do it, which means it’s not really your dream.

Procrastinating, putting your dream off is fine as long as you’re 100 percent sure that you’re not going to die tomorrow. Because if you haven’t noticed, there’s a 100 percent mortality rate – you’re going to die someday. And if you’re honest with yourself, you will admit that you never once as a kid said to anyone, “When I grow up all that it will take to make me happy is matching drapes, or a riding lawnmower that mulches or a newly remodeled bathroom.” No. You wanted to be a cowboy or an explorer or a pirate.

So…?

The problem is not that you don’t have the time. The problem is inside you. When you look in the mirror and see a guy who’s not rich yet, there is not a “rich person inside” you. There is a dude who would rather watch reality TV or Monday Night Football with his mouth hanging open instead of reading a book about investing. Instead of starting a business. Instead of learning the concepts of building wealth.

People get excited about a new get rich quick scheme that they just bought, but the authors of that junk are not going to walk into your bedroom and wake you up at 5 a.m. to get you to use it. Neither is that motivational tape you bought last year and didn’t listen to. If you are lazy, nothing you can buy is going to make you less lazy.

Here’s some news for you: If you’re the type of person that reads a blog like this, you’re the type of person who should be able to find some way to become wealthy. You’re not a person who’s going to whine that she has to save money, or that her kitchen is outdated, or that you “just don’t have time” and then go sit on your couch eating Doritos until one day you’re age 50 and you’ve got less than a thousand dollars in your bank account. It’s a matter of inertia, and overcoming inertia has nothing to do with getting out your credit card and spending money.

Here’s the truth. We exist on this earth for some undetermined period of time. During that time we do things. Some of these things are important. Some of them are unimportant. And those important things do this – they give our lives meaning and happiness. The unimportant ones basically just kill time.

So when people say, “What should I do with my life?” or “What is my life purpose?” what they’re actually asking is: “What should I do that is important?”

This is an infinitely better question to ask. It’s far more manageable and it doesn’t have all of the ridiculous baggage that the “life purpose” question does. There’s no reason for you to be contemplating the cosmic significance of your life while sitting on your couch all day. Rather, you should be getting off your rear end and discovering what is important to you.

And how will you know that’s it’s important? Easy. You’ll get so consumed in it that it will make you forget to eat.

It’s been said that Isaac Newton’s mother had to regularly come in and remind him to eat because he would go entire days so absorbed in his work that he would forget.

I was obsessed with becoming financially free. Yes, obsessed. I would sit and read books about investing, wealth building and self-improvement instead of doing mindless activities like golf, shopping or gossiping. And when I applied that obsessiveness for improvement to wealth building, well, things took off in a very big way.

And they will for you as well. But only if you’ll start.

You see, for many, the enemy is just old-fashioned complacency. They get into their routines. They distract themselves. The couch is comfortable. The popcorn is delicious. And nothing new happens.

This is the problem.

What most people don’t understand is that passion is the result of action, not the cause of it.

So ask yourself, if someone put a gun to your head and forced you to leave your house every day for everything except for sleep, how would you choose to occupy yourself? Would it be to go sit in a coffee shop and browse Facebook? Do you already do that? Let’s pretend there are no useless websites, no video games, no TV. You have to be outside of the house all day every day until it’s time to go to bed — where would you go and what would you do?

Would you read a book on investing? Listen to a self-improvement tape? Start that business that will build wealth for you and your family? Find ways to save money?

What would you do with all of that time?

Be free. Nothing else is worth it.
