While most people make lists of what they’re going to do, today I want to challenge you to do something different. Consider making a list of the things you’re going to stop doing – the things that are no longer in your best interest. Rather than make a to-do list, make a stop-doing list instead.
What do you need to stop doing in order to make a happy, successful, and fulfilling life? Only you know. But to help get the creative juices flowing, here are 27 things below, that if you’re doing now, would be good candidates to stop doing in to truly move forward in life:
.Stop procrastinating. Don’t put off saving money for tomorrow, and waiting to be inspired to begin your personal journey towards financial freedom. Time is impossible to find. Start now.
.Stop complaining. Complaining never made anything better, only consistent action does.
.Stop holding yourself back. There are enough obstacles to success out there, why would you want to add more?
.Stop telling yourself a story. Tell yourself the truth about your habits with money, so you can create a different story with a better ending.
.Stop searching for a silver bullet to money dilemmas. Use the ammunition you already have available, which are: hard work, persistence and good money habits.
.Stop believing you have to be great to start. It’s just the opposite – you have to start to be great.
.Stop trying to just be comfortable. People who just want to be comfortable miss so many amazing opportunities to have a better life. Choose the life you want over what’s comfortable.
.Stop comparing yourself to others. What you see may not be reality. That neighbor with the expensive car may be up to his eyeballs in debt and worried sick each day about making the payments.
.Stop doubting. If you have a feeling that you should be doing more with your life, don’t ignore it. When it keeps coming back, it’s for a reason. Take action and follow the ideas that flood your mind.
.Stop letting others do your thinking. Don’t take advice from people who haven’t achieved the success you demand for yourself. Make decisions based on what you have to do. It’s your life and you’ll have to live with the choices you make. You don’t need to choose the mediocre when greatness exists.
.Stop waiting from someone to change. Leave toxic people and energy vampires behind. Start devoting more time to the people you actually like and aspire to be like.
.Stop being frustrated that you don’t have a quality you think you should have. Pick one virtue to practice building each day, like spending moderation or patience.
.Stop thinking you need to pick a goal that’s attainable. Start pushing your own boundaries and create your own revolution.
.Stop thinking you have to get it right on the first try. Mistakes are normal. Just make sure they are new mistakes.
.Stop fretting over the past. You can’t change the past, only the future. Focus on the now.
.Stop one bad habit each month. Start by eliminating a small, bad habit rather than your biggest bad habit. Starting small will give you confidence for tackling the big bad habits later. Over time, this will have a powerful effect.
.Stop letting others steal your time. This starts with ‘can you just…’ and results with you being involved in time-killing activities that are of no benefit to you or your goals.
18. Stop ignoring the difficult steps – that large elephant in the room, you know the one. Just get started. You will find it’s much easier than you think.
.Stop running from your problems. Face them head on. No, it won’t be easy. But neither is living a life of fear.
.Stop blaming others. It’s time to be accountable for your own life – its success and mistakes. Let go of blaming anyone for anything; be accountable for your own life. If you don’t like something, you have two choices, accept it or change it.
.Stop losing money. It’s never too late to make a fresh financial start. Give yourself permission to review your mistakes and move forward.
.Stop believing what you want to believe, because it’s convenient. Ignoring a problem doesn’t make it go away, it just makes it more expensive.
.Stop snoozing. The way that you start the day basically dictates how the rest of your day will go. Jump out of bed and seize the day.
.Stop taking vacation. No, I don’t mean from work. Never take a day off from working toward your dreams, toward your goals and toward the life that you must have.
.Stop letting the you of yesterday be the you of today. Every day of our lives the circumstances change — the world is different. Nothing ever stays the same around us, so there is no reason why we should remain unchanged.
.Stop being afraid to ask. So many opportunities are lost because someone simply failed to ask. You’ll be surprised to know how many people are just as afraid of saying “No” as they are hearing it. Knock on the door.
.Stop buying stuff you don’t need. The same way we learned that we need to think before we speak, the same logic applies to think before you buy. Before each purchase, ask yourself if you really need it.
Don’t worry if you saw quite a few things on the list that you need to stop doing. No one else is perfect, either. There is no guidebook or perfect formula, and often, life works much more as a process of elimination.
Shifts in thinking are a natural progression for success. These shifts aren’t always easy to embrace, but the first step toward change and growth is always self-awareness. What do you plan to stop doing today? Instead of making a to-do list, make a to-don’t list and start your revolution toward financial freedom.
