Our country was founded on revolution. We adopted the creed of freedom and then fought bitterly to gain it. Our forefathers did this for a specific reason – to bring an end to a world where wealth and power were restricted to a chosen few.
And boy how they succeeded.
From independence day on, this country has unlocked human potential like no other. Thousands of millionaires have been created. Hundreds of billionaires got their start here. And in the near future, this nation will create its very first trillionaire.
If you live in the US, I hope I don’t have to tell you that you have an incredible opportunity. More wealth is unlocked here than any other place on the planet. More millionaires are created here, and at a faster pace, than any other country in the world. No other place on earth has provided an easier path to achieve financial freedom than right here in the United States.
Yet, you wouldn’t know it.
Only a small percentage of Americans have availed themselves of the wonderful opportunity for financial freedom this land offers. Most couldn’t be bothered. As I’ve said many times, the opposite of financial success is not financial failure. It’s apathy.
Back To Being Ruled By A King?
There’s no shortage of money in this country. Hardly. The only shortage I see are the number of people who have the courage, and will, to go get it. It’s as if many would prefer to go back to the way things were. If we are just basing things on their actions, we could only assume that over 90% of the country would rather go back to being ruled and taxed by a king, with absolutely no chance of getting rich! It’s as if the revolution has died in these people.
You see, for as great as this country is, there’s an insidious by-product of its success – sloth. They say that a rising tide raises all ships in the harbor and that’s true. With all the advances in the standard of living that have been created by our country’s progress, it has unfortunately created an opportunity for many to do little, or nothing at all.
As the great Jim Rohn said, “What is easy to do is easy not to do.”
Indeed.
Many know that they should be spending less than they make, but they still find themselves with no money in the bank. They know they need to put money back for retirement, yet they find themselves putting it off for another day. They know they should start that side business, the one that could make them rich, but yet they don’t pay attention to it and just forget about it. They know they should make investment, as investment has brought untold numbers out of mediocrity and onto wealth, yet they keep putting it off.
I’m often asked what the No. 1 obstacle is for someone to achieve financial freedom. My answer is laziness. Too lazy to care. Too lazy to take responsibility. Too lazy to do the little things.
And why is that?
Because it’s easy to be lazy! The reason many don’t do the work to succeed is that it’s sooooo easy not to – to neglect, procrastinate, and to promise themselves that they’ll do it tomorrow.
When the little things are looked at individually, most don’t value their importance. Napoleon Hill said, “A big success is made up from a great number of little circumstances each of which may seem so small and insignificant most people pass them by as not being worthy of notice.”
My friends, if you are going to be successful at anything personally or professionally, it will result from doing the little things that, for the most part, are easy to do but also easy to neglect. Every big success is made up of little successes. As Coach John Wooden said, “Little things make big things happen.”
The fact that you are reading this blog tells me that you want to achieve more in life. If you are going to be successful at achieving your goals, you must become a disciplined person. You must become a person who will do the little things that are easy to do and easy not to do.
How You Do One Thing Is How You Do Everything
I also want to point out that I believe there is little distinction between who a person is in their personal life and who they want to be in the future. If a person’s finances are a mess, then their life is probably a mess. If a person doesn’t have the discipline to take care of small things, they will likely struggle having the discipline to take care of the bigger things. In other words, if you don’t manage $5.00 well today, you won’t manage $50,000 well in the future. How you do one thing is how you do everything.
There are a lot of cute little memes out there that start with, “Be calm and….” While those sayings may make for clever bumper stickers, they are the opposite of the attitude required for success.
If you want to achieve more in your life, if you want to grow as a person and achieve your personal best, then you MUST become a person who does the little things that are both easy to do and easy not to do. You must not be calm. You must not give in to the philosophy of just getting by. You must not marry that toxic bride of comfort. You must become the person who will revolt against mediocrity.
Becoming financially free will likely be the greatest challenge you will ever take on, but if you will commit to this challenge and use your personal initiative to do the things you know you should do with consistency, your life can be transformed.
In closing, our forefathers just started the revolution, they didn’t end it. They declared their independence which gave citizens of this country the right to pursue happiness. Many won’t even bother to pursue it. If you truly want happiness, then you’ll need to not only pursue it, you must fight for it. Fight for the life you need and the one you deserve. So, the question is this – will you finish the dream of financial freedom? Will you finish the revolution?
Be free. Nothing else is worth it.
