Recently, LinkedIn asked more than a million of its followers for the best advice they’d give their 20-year-old selves. The answers they got back resulted in a ton of useful advice.
Some of the tips were strange and hilarious such as beware “reply all,” and eat less pizza (not sure I agree with this one!). Others, like “believe in yourself!” and “don’t procrastinate,” were more common.
But among all the advice, one bit of wisdom kept coming up again and again.
It was this…
Don’t wait for any of the following:
-To know more
-The perfect time
-To do more testing
-The ideal job
-The best market conditions
-When you have more data
-When the kids are in college
In other words, take action now.
Because of this simple fact – action beats deliberation. Always has. Always will.
While deliberation can be an admirable quality, there’s a point in decision making where it turns into overanalyzing.
You’ve heard the phrase “perfection is the enemy of good enough”?
Perfectionism can breed indecisiveness. It can bring about delay and unnecessary hesitation. It can lead people to believe that if they don’t make the “right” choice, then they’ll fail. Or that you must know everything and anticipate every eventuality before starting.
Friends, there’s nothing wrong with moderate levels of planning. It’s very beneficial to map out a course and make plans for what you’re going to achieve. However, if you spend too much time analyzing what you’re going to do, you can often end up with less than you had to begin with, simply because you fail to start.
I know it’s tempting to try and predict all the things that could possibly go wrong with a plan and how to potentially handle such events should they occur, but doing so can lead to excessive worries. Thinking too much can prevent you from getting anything done.
Here’s a couple of questions to ponder:
Is fear or over-analyzing holding you back from the good life?
What small step can you take today to get past that and just start?
My recommendation: Just show up. Wherever that may be. The vast majority of millionaires are completely self-made. They had nothing more than you have right now. No better situation. No better timing. No better data.
The difference is that they began.
Confucious said: “Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without”.
Are you afraid to start that side business? Do you find investing intimidating? Concerned about being embarrassed to tell friends that you plan to be rich?
Could you imagine how different life would be if we gave up at each worry or failed attempt?
Just show up.
You may fail. You’ll probably make mistakes. But through mistakes, you will discover things about yourself that were once unimaginable. And it is then that you will decide you won’t let fear stop you anymore.
And when that happens, you’ll accomplish things that you only dreamed of prior.
Open up to the idea that whatever you create or start can evolve over time. It doesn’t have to be perfect or even complete to start benefiting you.
You could spend months creating a perfect business plan, only to find out that by the time you’re done, someone else beat you to it.
You could spend months thinking about how you’re going to make your fortune and miss out on income opportunities today.
Today, I urge you to start where you are. Make the conscious choice to abandon perfection and focus on making progress instead.
You’re capable of extraordinary things. But unless you let go of the idea of perfection, you’ll have a hard time achieving those amazing things.
The pursuit of perfection is honorable, but be willing to settle for “good enough”. For if you don’t, you may have to settle for nothing at all.
Be free. Nothing else is worth it.
